Reginald Charles was born to Robert and Isabella Chadder on 19 October 1894 at Newton Abbot in Devon. Reginaldís father, Robert, a former Staff Sergeant in the Royal Marines, worked as a Town Postman in Newton Abbot. Following his fatherís death in 1904, Reginald was admitted to the Alexandra Orphanage, in May 1905, aged 6. He left the School in November 1909, shortly after his fifteenth birthday, and started a three-year apprenticeship with Messrs Dickens and Jones, a department store in Regent Street in Central London. The 1911 Census shows Reginald living at the store and working as a Clerk. Reginald volunteered for military service and joined the Middlesex Regiment on 15 August 1914, ten days after Britain declared war on Germany. The Regimentís 17th Battalion, Duke of Cambridgeís Own, was formed of volunteers on 12 December 1914. On 18 November 1915, the Regiment arrived at Boulogne to join the fighting on the Western Front. L/Cpl Chadder was killed in action, during the Battle of the Somme, on 28 Jul 1916, aged 20. His sacrifice is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, between Albert and Bapaume, in France, together with 72,000 others who died in the Battle, between July and November 1916, and who have no known grave. At the time of L/Cpl Chadderís death his mother was living in Newton Abbot, Devon.
